HAWKBILL IN MY BASEMENT
Dennis Crile, ETCM (SS), served on Hawkbill from 1987 - 1993 and 1996 - 2000. He made this comment when asked what prompted him to begin this project, "NASA's finest hour was the Apollo program. My finest hour was the USS Hawkbill. This project is a step back in time. My way of recalling that experience."
Dennis has provided a 2019 update to his basement
A Naugahyde table cover (bought a sewing machine on Amazon and made it),
book shelves above the table (with bars to stow for sea),
my shadow box between the book cases,
more plaques I dug out of boxes,
a cup rack outside of berthing,
real submarine bunk lights I found on E-Bay,
a bulletin board with name tags and patches in it,
and something a little out of character, a small flat screen TV on a swivel mount
so I can watch it from the lounge or laying in the bunks. I sleep down there occasionally when I work nights.
